Breed Profile: The Exotic Shorthair

The Exotic Shorthair cat is often referred to as the ‘lazy man’s Persian’, the reason for which is that they have all the endearing features of the Persian Cat but without the hard work involved in maintaining a massive coat.

They are basically a short-haired Persian.  They are of medium size, have relatively short and cobby bodies, large expressive eyes,  small ears, a relatively short tail and on the males, very chumpy cheeks.  The females are considerably smaller than the males.  They remind me very much of a teddy bear that purrs.

They are very docile in nature and are not overly active, but sure can put on a turn of speed if a toy on a string comes into sight, a laser pointer is spotted, or someone rattles the food bowl!  They are generally very affectionate to their owners and are really big purrers.

Grooming & Eye Care

The Exotic coat is very easy to care for. A comb once a week is about all that is needed.  Because of the flatness of the face some eye care is needed as they do sometimes weep a little, but that usually requires just a quick wipe with a tissue or makeup wipe daily.

They are generally very easy going cats that get along well with adults, children and other animals.
